Oratorical Competition
The Pazzaz Inc. 4th Council District High School Oratorical
Contest targets students residing in or attending schools in
the 4th Council District (Southeastern San Diego).
The
2002-2003 school year represents Pazzaz's 7th year in offering
this rigorous competition. The Oratorical Contest is a six-month
program beginning in October and culminating in April. The
program focuses on developing students' writing skills, oral
communication skills, and their reading, research and analytical
skills.
During the six-month period, students have the opportunity
to develop their topic and public speaking skills by attending
weekend training sessions facilitated by Dr. Annjennette McFarlin,
contest chairperson. Dr. McFarlin is a professor with the
Grossmont College Communications Department and a noted orator
and storyteller. Grossmont College now awards college credit
to those participants 16 years of age and older who regularly
attend the weekend sessions. This is an added incentive for
students who participate in the competition.
Contest
topics center on current and oftentimes controversial topics.
For example, last year's topic was, "Does Increased Public
Safety Justify Intrusions on Personal Privacy?" Students
must site at least ten sources in a speech length of 8-10
minutes. Students participate in three competitions, 1st round,
2nd round, and Finals. All first place winners receive a cash
award of $250, second place winners $150, and third place
winners $50. First place winners ultimately compete for the
top honor of Standout Orator. The Standout Orator receives
a $2,000 scholarship.
