Many children who fail academically do not have learning problems. More often, they are caused by a variety of factors. In many cases, it’s because they don’t believe they can succeed.

PAZZAZ works closely and individually with students, helping them believe in themselves and in their ability to succeed. PAZZAZ also works with and teachers to surround children with an environment that fosters and supports progress.

Children first come to PAZZAZ for the core program of tutoring and homework assistance. A staff of 14 and a host of trained volunteers provide tutoring and homework assistance in small groups of four in reading, writing, and all subject areas in grades 1 – 12. Most of these students are failing in one or more subjects and have simply stopped trying. Tutors help identify learning obstacles and work with the students to overcome them. As children see themselves in a new light, their willingness to try perseveres.

If reading is the root of a learning problem, students who are two or more grades below reading level participate in Reading with PAZZAZ. The comprehensive reading program develops students’ awareness of oral actions that produce the sounds of speech. They learn to better recognize sounds within words, which helps reading levels increase rapidly. Partnering one tutor with three students, the program also uses computer-based instruction and shows parents how to become more involved.
